Types of Health Insurance Plans: What’s the Difference?
• HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) – Lower costs, but you must use a network of doctors and need a referral to see specialists.
• PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) – More flexibility; see any doctor, in or out of network, no referral needed.
• EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) – Similar to PPO but no out-of-network coverage except emergencies.
• POS (Point of Service) – Mix of HMO and PPO; referrals needed, but some out-of-network coverage allowed.
