Obtaining information through intercepting signals, whether they are human communications (COMINT, or “communications intelligence”) or electronic signals (ELINT, “electronic intelligence”) that are not specifically being used for communication, is referred to as “signals intelligence” (SIGINT). Signals intelligence is managed as part of intelligence gathering. Because sensitive and confidential information is often encrypted, signals intelligence also uses cryptanalysis to decipher the transmissions.
